Thursday, May 16th 2013, Sammlung Goetz collection - Munich

The Goetz Collection  opens  the second part of the exhibition of works by Roni Horn on.

The artist gave her performance lecture Saying Water. During her reading the artist shared her thoughts on nature, literature, sexuality and death. For Roni Horn, water is a metaphor for the existential experience of life.

Some Thames, 2000, Clowd and Cloun (Blue), 2000–2001, and other works by the artist are on show at the Goetz Collection until the end of August. Roni Horn again designed the exhibition, and – as is typical of her approach – the new arrangement is conceived as a dialogue, not as a chronology of her work.

Erica Baum, "Blanks/ Naked Eye Anthology" opening

“The Naked Eye Anthology comes out of paperbacks from the sixties and the seventies with cheap black and white photographic reproductions, yellowing pages and richly dyed edges. Baum produces through fanning and photographing pages from the books, images analogous to experimental film, with an often pronounced scopophillic quality. Interiors, objects and glimpses of female figures are cut by stripes of colour that block uninterrupted entry into the entire narrative.” Melas Papadopoulos

... just a breath captured  exhibition

22.3.2012-16.6. 2013

Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625) is one of the most important Flemish painters of the early 17th century. He developed his own individual style at an early stage. His small-format landscape paintings, true-to-life floral works and richly detailed allegories were ground-breaking for Flemish Baroque painting.

With 49 works painted in the artist’s own hand, the holdings at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich are unique and document Jan Brueghel the Elder’s œuvre in its many facets.

A visit at Brandhorst Museum to see a new installed piece by Cady Noland " Deep Social Space"

"....The installation ‘Deep Social Space’ evokes an eerie, lonely place due to the barriers and obstructions made of cold, hard material. Noland dispenses with a hierarchical order for the objects and thereby allows them to speak about the inner psychological state of American society for themselves. The artist consciously stages her work as an aesthetic disturbance to
the omnipresent display of success...."

"DEGENERATE ART -The 2010 Berlin Sculpture Find"  ..  01.11.2012-28.01.2013

An amazing exhibition at Neue  Pinakothek in Munich,  last day today.

".........several sculptures have been unearthed from a site in front of Berlin's Rotes Rathaus that have since been identified as works confiscated during the National Socialists' 'Degenerate Art' campaign. These include Edwin Scharff's bronze of the film actress Anni Mewes (1896-1980), that had been in the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. It was seized by the 'Kommission Direktor Stahl' from the depot in the Deutsche Museum's library building in summer 1937 and sent to Berlin by the Spedition Knauer transport company. The first ten of these finds were displayed to the public in November 2010 in the Neues Museum in Berlin. Further excavations have since uncovered new works so that 16 sculptures, that had once been confiscated and had lay hidden in the bomb debris of a residential building for decades since the end of World War II".

Felix  Thiollier (1842-1914) photographs  ( 13 Novembre 2012-10 March 2013)

"....the talent of photographer Felix Thiollier was still unrecognized 20 years ago ..."

This first monograph in Paris devoted to Félix Thiollier will pay tribute to the industrialist from Saint Etienne who, at the age of 37, decided to live off his private income and concentrate on his passionate interest for local research and collecting art.
Having satisfied these desires by publishing illustrated books aimed at promoting both the conservation of the heritage of Forez and the work of his artist friends – the most prominent of whom included Auguste Ravier, Paul Borel and Jean-Paul Laurens – these passions went on to produce a talented amateur photographer.

Monday, 24th  December at Musée du Louvre, Paris

This unprecedented exhibition, organized by the Louvre in partnership with the Prado Museum, brings together the works produced by Raphael in Rome during the last years of his short life.

This was the period in which his style attained its full maturity, marking without a doubt the apogee of the Italian Renaissance.

Wednesday, November 21, 2012: Preview with the Freunde of Haus der Kunst

ECM – Eine kulturelle Archäologie (ECM_-A Cultural Archaeology)

at Haus der Kunst, Munich, 23.11.2012 – 10.2.2013

The inaugural exhibition of the director of Haus der Kunst, Okwui  Enwezor (and Markus Müller); there will be accompanying concerts and films curated by Manfred Eicher., the founder of ECM

Designed as a sensorial field where photographic, sonic, filmic, typographic, and installation showcases ECM’s cultural breadth – not just in the music world but also within the broader artistic universe, thus pointing to the label’s interdisciplinary and cross-cultural, in which the complex relationships between sound and image, graphic design and contemporary art find their place.[tt_news]=3008

Friday July 20th 2012 at 7pm opening of the  installation "REPLICA" by Ayzit Bostan and performance by Gerhard Kellerman in the Hofgarten by Kunstverein, Munich

Installation exhibit runs until October 21st 2012.

A wonderful show that opened on Friday, July 14th (runs thru September 9th, 2012) is a group installation at Kunstverein in Munich "The Imaginary Museum"curated by the director of the Kunsteverein, Bart van der Heide.

Artists: Becky Beasley, Eric Bell & Kristofer Frick, Oliver Laric, Mark Leckey, SImon Martin & Ad Atkins, James Richards, Jimmy Robert, Sean Snyder.

A beautiful small catalogue pamplet (blue and green) published including the text  "The Imaginary Museum of Plaster Casts" by the art historian Sven Lütticken.

As van der Heide opens in his foreword ..."the questions that arise through such a continuous appropriation of aura engage a young generation of artists as well, the text that yet the historical status of plaster cast collections 'remains contradictory', argues art historian Sven Luetticken,' and therefore interesting. Luetticken re-evaluates the critical influence of the plaster cast collection on the activities of contemporary artists vis-a-vis the referencing and reproducation of visual sources.

Munich _ April 17th, 2012
"Marcel Duchamp in Munich 1912"

An amazing show (from March 31st - July 15, 2012) at temporary location of Lenbachhaus at Kunstbau am U-Bahnhof Koenigsplatz.

On the 100th anniversary of Marcel Duchamp's stay in Munich, the Lebenchaus has decided to mark this key moment in the artist's life with an exhibition which is at a fabulous space under the U Bahn station of Koenigsplatz. Curators: Helmut Friedl, Thomas Girst, Mathias Mueling. Felicia Rappe...continued

" His readymades changed our idea of art.... at the end of June , 1912 Duchamp rises in Munich from the train to visit his good friend
Max Bergmann. He stays for 3 months and he develops several important works. He finds important technical details as an inspiration for his work..
from the german museum and the bavarian trade show. The Munich episode is rich both in art historical significance and personal anecdote.
Later Duchamp was to write of his time in Munich; My stay in Munich was the scene of my complete liberation "...

Soon after his visit in the Bavarian capital Duchamp issues his "bicycle wheel" (1913) which has come as the first Readymade into the art history and defines an industrially made object as a piece of art..Marcel Duchamp has never before been the subject of a solo show in Munich and no work of his is owned by a public collection here_which makes this Lenbachhaus exhibition long overdue" (exhibition press release)

A rare interview of Marcel Duchamp by BBC is on view on private monitors in german and english - a must!
